Fans Are Being Granted a New Game in the Best Star Wars Series of All Time, Led by a Mass Effect Trilogy Developer.

The galaxy far, far away fans have no shortage of titles when it comes to stellar interactive experiences featuring lightsabers, but the galaxy created by George Lucas is far beyond a battleground for fighting. Few series have understood this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the traditional computer role-playing game style that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare renowned. Now, after multiple fits and starts, a major gaming showcase has unveiled that players will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Exciting Unveiling

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a quintessential Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that was made of all the things we hoped to doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our aspirations are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic presents an opportunity to investigate a current vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story written specifically to fulfill the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

An Unexpected Turn

The announcement is something of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, reports had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development through March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

Why KOTOR Matters

The venerated role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their dialogue-heavy, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they unintentionally established how people picture the Old Republic age as a whole, even now. The games bravely chose to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often seen as absolute, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, veered in a much darker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans decades after their release, but the follow-up in particular is viewed by many as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

The Future is Bright

And now, four years after seeing a atmospheric trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the same vein. Given the craving for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the chance to be a massive hit.
