Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a crushing 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after guard Rozier was detained for suspected illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the allegations.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
