The Actress Says Discussing Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels fitting to voice opinions regarding the Trump administration, concerned it could intensify polarizing arguments and further divisions across the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Notes the Actress
During a discussion, Lawrence commented, “During the first Trump administration, I believed I was running around without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars do not make a difference whatsoever on voter decisions.”
She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to worsen tensions that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Political Evolution
Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about supporting conservative and liberal contenders in past elections. Growing up with conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she supported John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the Democratic party and stating she recognized during the Obama era that voting Republican was voting against her own rights as a woman.
Previous Comments
Several years ago, she commented that a Trump victory would be “the end of the world” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “because I think she’s an amazing candidate and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Lawrence was joined by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the public choices was underscored by the outcome.
“Another four years seems distinct,” said Lawrence of his administration. “Since he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for four years. He was explicit. And voters made that decision.”
Latest Film
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she portrays a new mother who faces challenges with her emotional state in the countryside. During a press conference for the film in the film festival, Lawrence addressed the situation in the Middle East: “It’s frightening. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s terrible.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by saying that she was disappointed by “the hostility in the conversations of American politics right now and how that is going to be accepted to the kids now. It’s going to be normal to them that elected officials deceive.”
Lawrence sought to redirect outrage about the conflict to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she said, in what many took to be a allusion to the recent commitment signed by numerous Hollywood professionals to boycott certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is attracting awards attention for her performance in the new film. Although the director has rejected the narrative being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and mental illness, she revealed that she identified with parts of her character’s journey after the arrival of her new baby, soon after shooting ended.
“It was fear for my son,” she said, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was attempting. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a drug called Zurzuvae and I took it for 14 days and it made a difference.”
Career Moments
Lawrence also discussed regarding the freeing requirement of filming without clothes in the project while she was expecting and unable to exercise.
“There’s a freedom,” she commented, regarding the need to cast off vanity. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
