Much like bad weather swept through the northwest the night before, the home side blew United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This outcome marked successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s ability to balance league and continental football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared tired all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period
