Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
